A detailed historical drawing by Jan Goeree depicting the classical narrative of Lucretia and the birth of the Roman Republic.
This drawing by Jan Goeree depicts the classical narrative of Lucretia, a figure whose tragic death served as the catalyst for the overthrow of the Roman monarchy and the establishment of the Roman Republic. Goeree, a prolific Dutch draughtsman and engraver, employs a dynamic composition that balances the chaotic energy of the crowd with the structured, monumental presence of the architecture and statuary. The scene is rendered in pen and ink, supplemented by grey wash to create depth and shadow, a technique common in the preparatory sketches of the period.
The foreground features figures reacting to the event, while the mid-ground shows the public assembly, with a central figure gesturing towards the elevated platform. The inclusion of a statue, likely representing Liberty, provides a clear thematic anchor for the composition. Goeree was well-known for his ability to translate complex historical and mythological narratives into accessible visual formats, often for use in book illustrations or as designs for prints. His line work is precise, capturing the expressive gestures of the figures while maintaining a sense of classical order.
This work demonstrates the artist's interest in historical themes, a common subject for Dutch artists of the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. The use of wash allows for a subtle modulation of light, guiding the viewer through the crowded scene. The inscription at the base of the drawing confirms the subject matter, linking the personal tragedy of Lucretia to the broader political shift toward republicanism. As a study, it offers a glimpse into the artist's process, showing how he organised multiple figures within a single frame to convey a coherent story. The work remains a fine example of the narrative draughtsmanship that defined much of the Dutch artistic output during this era.
