A nineteenth-century albumen silver print by Francis Frith, capturing the dramatic stone architecture of the Devil's Bridge in the Swiss Gotthard Pass.
This albumen silver print depicts the Teufelsbrücke, or Devil's Bridge, situated within the Gotthard Pass in Switzerland. Captured by the British photographer Francis Frith, the image appears as a plate within the 1865 edition of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's prose romance, Hyperion. Frith, a prolific traveller and commercial photographer, produced this work during a period when the illustrated book market expanded rapidly, allowing readers to experience remote European locations through the medium of photography.
The composition focuses on the dramatic verticality of the gorge, where the stone bridge spans the turbulent Reuss river. The steep, jagged rock faces dominate the frame, providing a sense of scale that emphasises the engineering feat required to traverse such terrain. The photograph demonstrates the technical precision Frith applied to his topographical studies, balancing the deep shadows of the ravine with the bright, exposed stone surfaces. The inclusion of the bridge as a man-made structure against the raw geological features reflects the nineteenth-century fascination with the sublime, where nature is both beautiful and formidable.
As a commercial photographer, Frith was instrumental in bringing the sights of Europe and the Middle East to a British audience. His work for the publisher Alfred William Bennett helped establish the photographic book as a standard for travel literature. This print captures the specific atmospheric quality of the alpine environment, rendered in the warm, sepia tones characteristic of the albumen process. The image remains a record of mid-Victorian travel, documenting the Gotthard Pass before the extensive modern infrastructure projects that later altered the region. It provides a clear view of the historical bridge, which has been replaced and rebuilt several times throughout the centuries due to the harsh conditions of the mountain pass.
