Part of a series of paintings exploring spiritual themes, 'The Dove, Nr. 12' by Hilma af Klint features a large, grey sphere with a ring around it, set against a bright yellow background, and incorporates astrological symbols.
Hilma af Klint (1862-1944) was a Swedish artist and mystic whose paintings are considered among the first abstract works in Western art history. She created her first abstract paintings in 1906, several years before Kandinsky, Mondrian, and Malevich. Af Klint believed that she was acting as a medium for spiritual entities, who guided her hand in creating these works. She worked in relative obscurity during her lifetime, stipulating that her abstract work not be exhibited until 20 years after her death, as she believed the world was not yet ready for it. Her work has since gained considerable attention. 'The Dove, Nr. 12' is part of a series of paintings exploring spiritual themes. The painting features a large, grey sphere with a ring around it, set against a bright yellow background. The sphere is textured with gold leaf, adding a luminous quality. Four astrological symbols are placed in the corners of the composition. A small, colourful orb is positioned in the centre of the larger sphere. The work combines geometric forms with symbolic elements, reflecting af Klint's interest in spiritualism and theosophy.
