A woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicting the Temma Bridge in Osaka during a lantern festival. The print captures the festive atmosphere of the event with delicate colours and a balanced composition.
Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist, considered the last great master of that tradition. He is best known for his horizontal-format series of woodblock prints, particularly those depicting atmospheric scenes of Edo-period Japan. His work influenced European artists such as Van Gogh and Monet. Hiroshige's prints often feature detailed observations of nature and daily life, rendered with a delicate sense of light and shadow. This print depicts the Temma Bridge in Osaka during a lantern festival. The bridge is crowded with people carrying lanterns, creating a festive atmosphere. Boats filled with people also populate the river below. The composition is carefully balanced, with the bridge forming a strong horizontal line across the centre of the image. The artist uses subtle gradations of colour to create a sense of depth and atmosphere. The scene captures a moment of communal celebration, reflecting the vibrant culture of Edo-period Japan.
