A masterful late fifteenth-century engraving by Martin Schongauer, depicting the Flagellation of Christ with exceptional technical precision and dramatic intensity.
Martin Schongauer, a master of the late fifteenth-century German school, produced this engraving as part of his series depicting the Passion of Christ. The composition centres on the figure of Christ, bound to a central column, surrounded by his tormentors. Schongauer employs a sophisticated system of cross-hatching to define the musculature of the figures and the textures of their garments, demonstrating a technical precision that influenced generations of printmakers, including Albrecht Dürer.
The scene is contained within an arched frame, a common device in Schongauer's work that provides a sense of architectural enclosure. The figures are rendered with a focus on psychological intensity, particularly in the expressions of the torturers, whose dynamic postures contrast with the stillness of the central figure. The artist uses varied line weights to create depth, from the fine, delicate strokes defining the facial features to the heavier, more robust lines that establish the shadows and the weight of the drapery on the floor.
Schongauer's ability to balance narrative drama with formal control is evident here. The arrangement of the figures creates a sense of movement, as the torturers occupy the space around the column, their limbs angled to guide the viewer's eye across the scene. The inclusion of the crown of thorns and the discarded garments in the foreground adds a layer of symbolic detail, grounding the theological subject in a tangible, physical reality. This print remains a primary example of the capabilities of the burin during the early period of European printmaking, showcasing the transition from medieval stylistic conventions toward the naturalism that would define the Northern Renaissance.
