Description

A circular engraving by Master E.S. featuring Saint John the Baptist at the centre, surrounded by the four Evangelists and their symbolic attributes.

This circular engraving by the elusive Master E.S. displays the technical precision characteristic of mid-fifteenth-century German printmaking. The composition is organised around a central medallion depicting Saint John the Baptist in the wilderness, accompanied by the Lamb of God. Surrounding this core scene are four smaller circular frames, each containing one of the Evangelists: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. These figures are depicted alongside their traditional symbolic attributes, including the winged man, the lion, the ox, and the eagle.

The spaces between these circular motifs are filled with dense, scrolling foliage and decorative flourishes. Master E.S. utilised a system of fine hatching and cross-hatching to define form and shadow, a technique that allowed for greater tonal variation than earlier woodcut methods. The circular format, or tondo, was a popular choice for devotional objects and decorative plates during this period, often intended for private contemplation or as a design source for goldsmiths and other craftsmen.

Master E.S. remains one of the most significant figures in the history of early European printmaking. His work bridges the gap between the earlier, more linear style of the Gothic period and the more volumetric, naturalistic approach that would define the later Renaissance. The clarity of the line work and the balanced distribution of the figures demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of spatial organisation within a constrained, circular boundary. This print provides a clear view into the iconographic traditions of the fifteenth century, where the lives of saints and the symbols of the Gospels were frequently combined into single, unified visual narratives. The work is a fine example of the high level of craftsmanship achieved by professional engravers working in the Upper Rhine region during the late Middle Ages.
