Shōhaku presents the deity in a small boat, accompanied by a deer and interacting with a turtle, both of which are symbols of long life in Japanese iconography. A crane, another auspicious creature, flies above in the mist, completing the thematic focus on immortality.

The composition is characteristic of Shōhaku's approach to figure painting. He employs exaggerated facial features and expressive, angular lines to define the form of the elderly deity. The contrast between the detailed, almost grotesque rendering of Jurōjin's face and the more fluid, calligraphic treatment of the surrounding pine tree and water demonstrates his technical range. The palette remains restrained, relying on muted earth tones and subtle washes of colour to create a sense of atmosphere, while the silk support provides a soft texture that enhances the delicate ink work.
