A study of the Mediterranean coast near Antibes, capturing the interplay of light on rugged rocks and water through broken, expressive brushwork.
Painted during his extended stay in the south of France in 1888, this work captures the Mediterranean coastline near Antibes. Claude Monet spent several months in the region, producing a series of canvases that document the specific atmospheric conditions of the French Riviera. The composition focuses on the rugged rock formations in the foreground, which contrast with the distant, hazy outline of the mountains across the water.
Monet employs a technique of rapid, broken brushstrokes to convey the movement of light across the surface of the sea and the texture of the stone. The palette is dominated by cool blues and purples, punctuated by warmer ochre and orange tones that suggest the intensity of the southern sun. By focusing on the interplay between the solid, weathered rocks and the fluid, shifting water, the artist records a fleeting moment of observation. The sky is rendered with soft, horizontal strokes that unify the scene, creating a sense of expansive space.
This painting reflects the artist's interest in seriality, where the same subject is revisited under different conditions to explore the variability of perception. The lack of human figures or man-made structures emphasises the raw, natural character of the coast. The application of paint is thick and tactile, particularly in the foreground, where the impasto technique gives physical weight to the rocky terrain. This approach allows the viewer to observe the process of construction, as individual marks of colour coalesce into a coherent image only when viewed from a distance. The work remains a clear example of the Impressionist concern with capturing the transient effects of light and colour in an outdoor setting.
