A 19th-century albumen print by Fratelli Alinari documenting Pietro Lorenzetti's 14th-century fresco, The Hermits in the Desert, in the Camposanto of Pisa.
This albumen print by the Fratelli Alinari studio documents the fresco cycle known as Thebaid, or The Hermits in the Desert, originally painted by the Sienese master Pietro Lorenzetti in the Camposanto Monumentale of Pisa. The original fresco, dating to the mid-14th century, depicts the ascetic lives of early Christian hermits. It is a complex narrative composition, populated by numerous small figures engaged in prayer, manual labour, and contemplation within a rocky, rugged terrain.
The Alinari brothers, pioneers of photographic documentation in Italy, captured this image during the late 19th century. Their work provides a record of the fresco before the extensive damage caused by Allied bombing during the Second World War in 1944. The photograph preserves the spatial arrangement of the figures and the narrative flow of the original mural, which was designed to be read as a series of vignettes rather than a single unified perspective. The composition reflects the Sienese interest in descriptive detail and the integration of figures into a natural environment, a hallmark of Lorenzetti's approach to narrative painting.
As a photographic reproduction, this print offers a view into the historical state of the Camposanto. The inclusion of the surrounding architectural elements, such as the stone sarcophagi placed beneath the fresco, provides context for how the mural functioned within the funerary space of the cemetery. The print is mounted on card, typical of the presentation style favoured by the Alinari firm for their catalogue of Italian art and architecture. This image serves as a primary source for art historians studying the iconography of the desert fathers and the physical condition of the Pisan frescoes prior to their restoration.
