Description
Hendrick ter Brugghen's "The Incredulity of Saint Thomas" captures the biblical scene of Saint Thomas touching the wound of Christ. This oil painting exemplifies the Utrecht Caravaggism movement with its dramatic use of light and shadow.
Hendrick ter Brugghen's "The Incredulity of Saint Thomas" depicts a scene from the Gospel of John, where the Apostle Thomas doubts the resurrection of Jesus until he can physically touch his wounds. Ter Brugghen, a leading figure of the Utrecht Caravaggisti, brings a Dutch interpretation to the dramatic style of Caravaggio. This movement saw Dutch artists travelling to Italy in the early 17th century, absorbing Caravaggio's techniques, and then returning to the Netherlands to adapt them. The painting shows Christ surrounded by the Apostles. Thomas, identifiable by his hesitant expression, reaches out to touch the wound in Christ's side. The figures are closely grouped, their faces illuminated by a strong, raking light that accentuates their expressions and the folds of their garments. The colour palette is restrained, dominated by earth tones and punctuated by the red of Christ's wound and the ochre of a disciple's robe. Ter Brugghen's handling of light and shadow, known as chiaroscuro, creates a sense of drama and immediacy, drawing the viewer into the emotional heart of the scene.
