Paolo Uccello, a master of early Renaissance perspective, depicts the arrival of Micheletto Attendolo da Cotignola to aid the Florentine forces. The composition is defined by the rigid, geometric arrangement of lances and the stylised forms of the horses and riders. Uccello employs a distinct approach to space, where the figures appear almost sculptural against a dark, compressed background.
