Description
A detailed section from Paolo Uccello's Battle of San Romano, capturing the arrival of Micheletto Cotignola with geometric precision and Renaissance flair.
This work represents a section of the larger Battle of San Romano, a series of three paintings commissioned by the Bartolini Salimbeni family. Paolo Uccello, a master of early Renaissance perspective, depicts the arrival of Micheletto Attendolo da Cotignola to aid the Florentine forces. The composition is defined by the rigid, geometric arrangement of lances and the stylised forms of the horses and riders. Uccello employs a distinct approach to space, where the figures appear almost sculptural against a dark, compressed background. The use of gold leaf on the armour and harnesses reflects the lingering influence of the International Gothic style, while the mathematical precision of the lances demonstrates the artist's obsession with linear perspective. The horses are rendered with a sense of decorative artifice, their muscular forms simplified into rhythmic, repeating patterns. This panel captures the chaotic energy of a cavalry charge, yet it remains frozen in a state of calculated order. The colour palette is dominated by deep, earthy tones, punctuated by the metallic sheen of armour and the heraldic patterns on the shields. It is a study in the tension between the naturalistic observation of the period and the formal, almost abstract, requirements of decorative narrative painting.
