A refined Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Torii Kiyonaga, depicting a domestic scene from the series A Young Girl's Education.
This woodblock print by Torii Kiyonaga belongs to the series A Young Girl's Education from the Onna Imagawa. Kiyonaga, a master of the Ukiyo-e tradition, is recognised for his tall, graceful figures and his ability to capture domestic scenes with clarity and balance. In this composition, two women are depicted in an interior setting. One woman stands, adjusting a hanging fabric, while the other sits on the tatami mat, examining a document retrieved from a storage chest. The scene is quiet and observational, typical of the genre that focused on the daily lives and moral instruction of women during the Edo period.
The Onna Imagawa was a popular text used for the moral education of young women, and Kiyonaga’s series provides a visual interpretation of these lessons. The artist employs a refined line quality, characteristic of his mature style, which avoids excessive ornamentation in favour of clean, flowing contours. The composition is structured by the architectural elements of the room, such as the sliding screens and the hanging scroll, which provide a sense of depth without overwhelming the figures. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft, muted tones that allow the viewer to focus on the interaction and the subtle expressions of the subjects.
Kiyonaga’s work reflects the aesthetic preferences of the late 18th century, where the focus shifted towards more naturalistic proportions and sophisticated spatial arrangements. The print demonstrates his technical skill in woodblock carving and printing, with precise registration of the colour blocks. This piece offers a glimpse into the domestic sphere of the period, documenting the material culture, fashion, and social expectations of the time through a lens of quiet, everyday activity.
