A detailed 17th-century engraving by Cornelis Galle (II) after Anthony van Dyck, depicting the Lamentation of Christ with dramatic Baroque lighting.
This engraving by Cornelis Galle (II) depicts the Lamentation of Christ, a subject frequently explored during the Baroque period. The composition is based on a design by Anthony van Dyck, whose influence is evident in the dramatic lighting and the emotional weight of the figures. The scene shows the Virgin Mary cradling the body of Christ at the foot of the cross, accompanied by angels who observe the scene with expressions of grief.
Technically, the work demonstrates the precision of 17th-century Flemish engraving. Galle employs a variety of hatching and cross-hatching techniques to define the musculature of Christ, the folds of the drapery, and the atmospheric quality of the sky. The contrast between the dark, heavy shadows and the illuminated skin of the figures creates a sense of volume and depth. The inclusion of the crown of thorns and the nails in the foreground serves as a reminder of the Passion, grounding the spiritual narrative in physical objects.
Cornelis Galle (II) was a member of a prominent family of engravers in Antwerp, a city that functioned as a centre for print production in the 17th century. His work often involved translating the paintings of masters like Van Dyck and Rubens into the medium of print, allowing these compositions to reach a wider audience. The Latin inscription at the base, 'O NOS FELICES PER TE SALVATOR IESV, NAM TVA MORS NOBIS VITA SALVSQVE FVIT', translates to 'O happy we, through thee, Saviour Jesus, for thy death was life and salvation to us'. This text frames the image within a devotional context, typical of the period's religious publications. The print reflects the technical mastery of the Flemish school, where the engraver's hand is used to replicate the painterly effects of light and texture.
