A striking lithograph by Heinrich Hoerle, this 1925 work uses precise, calligraphic lines to explore themes of physical fragmentation and post-war identity.
Heinrich Hoerle, a central figure in the Cologne Dada movement and later associated with New Objectivity, produced this work during a period of intense social and political scrutiny in Weimar Germany. The lithograph depicts a couple in a style that merges anatomical distortion with a clinical, detached observation of the human form. Hoerle employs a precise, calligraphic line to define the figures, stripping away unnecessary detail to focus on the mechanical and psychological state of his subjects.
The male figure is rendered with a bald, elongated cranium and a beard, while the female figure possesses a similarly stylised head. Their hands are clasped in a manner that suggests a rigid, almost artificial connection. The inclusion of a hook-like prosthetic device held by the woman introduces a recurring theme in Hoerle's work: the physical fragmentation of the human body following the trauma of the First World War. This imagery reflects the broader societal preoccupation with the wounded veteran and the reconstruction of identity in a fractured post-war environment.
Hoerle's approach avoids sentimentality. Instead, he uses the stark contrast of black ink against a neutral paper tone to create a sense of alienation. The composition is flat, emphasising the graphic quality of the print over spatial depth. By reducing the human body to a series of geometric and organic shapes, Hoerle comments on the dehumanising effects of modern industrial society. This print serves as a record of the artist's engagement with the social realities of 1920s Germany, where the boundaries between the organic and the mechanical were increasingly blurred. The work remains a clear example of the artist's ability to combine technical precision with a biting, analytical perspective on the human condition.
