A detailed engraving by Agostino Carracci depicting the celestial upper portion of the martyrdom of Saint Justina, featuring a host of musical angels.
This engraving by Agostino Carracci depicts the celestial upper portion of the martyrdom of Saint Justina of Padua. The composition is organised around a central figure of God the Father, who is flanked by the Virgin Mary and the saint herself. The scene is populated by a multitude of angels, many of whom are engaged in musical performance, playing lutes, harps, and other instruments. The figures are set against a dense arrangement of clouds, which creates a sense of depth and atmospheric movement.
Carracci demonstrates his technical skill through the use of varied line weights and cross-hatching to define the forms of the drapery, the anatomy of the figures, and the soft texture of the clouds. The engraving is based on a painting by Paolo Veronese, which was originally commissioned for the church of Santa Giustina in Padua. Carracci was known for his ability to translate the painterly qualities of Venetian works into the medium of print, capturing the light and shadow of the original composition with precision.
This work reflects the stylistic tendencies of the late sixteenth century, where the influence of the High Renaissance was being adapted into the more dynamic and theatrical modes that would define the Baroque period. The crowded, busy composition is typical of large-scale altarpieces of the time, designed to convey a sense of divine abundance and heavenly order. The lower right corner features a figure in armour, likely a Roman soldier, providing a grounding element to the otherwise ethereal scene. The print serves as a record of a significant religious commission and demonstrates the collaborative nature of artistic production during this era, where engravers played a role in disseminating the compositions of major painters to a wider audience.
