A detailed narrative painting by Vittore Carpaccio depicting a miracle on the Rialto Bridge in late fifteenth-century Venice.
This painting by Vittore Carpaccio depicts a specific event in Venetian history: the healing of a possessed man by the relic of the True Cross. The scene is set at the Rialto Bridge, which at the time was a wooden structure. Carpaccio captures the daily life of Venice with precision, showing the architectural features of the city, the gondolas on the canal, and the varied costumes of the citizens. The composition is divided into distinct zones: the elevated loggia on the left where the miracle occurs, and the bustling canal scene on the right.
Carpaccio was a master of narrative detail. He fills the canvas with figures engaged in various activities, from the solemn procession of clergy to the casual movements of boatmen. The painting provides a visual record of late fifteenth-century Venice, documenting the urban environment and the social hierarchy of the period. The use of light and shadow helps to define the depth of the canal and the solidity of the buildings. The artist employs a clear, linear style that allows for the inclusion of many small, descriptive elements without cluttering the overall scene. This work was originally part of a larger cycle commissioned for the Scuola Grande di San Giovanni Evangelista, a confraternity that held the relic. It remains a primary source for understanding the appearance of Venice before the major architectural changes of the sixteenth century.
