A sixteenth-century etching by Léon Davent depicting a mythological scene from the School of Fontainebleau.
This etching by Léon Davent belongs to the School of Fontainebleau, a group of artists active in France during the mid-sixteenth century. The work depicts a scene from the mythological narrative of Pluto and Proserpine, specifically focusing on the transformation of nymphs. The composition features winged figures emerging from the water, while others take flight against a backdrop of a fortified hilltop town.
Davent, a printmaker associated with the circle of artists working under the patronage of Francis I, employed a precise, linear technique characteristic of the period. The etching demonstrates the influence of Italian Mannerism, which was imported to the French court by artists such as Rosso Fiorentino and Francesco Primaticcio. The figures possess elongated proportions and a sense of fluid movement, typical of the aesthetic preferences of the era.
The inclusion of Latin text at the base, 'At Nympharum Hecates Scapulis timor addidit alas', provides a direct link to the classical source material. The print serves as an example of the dissemination of mythological themes through reproductive printmaking, a practice that allowed the sophisticated visual language of the Fontainebleau court to reach a wider audience. The treatment of the natural environment, with its stylized trees and distant architecture, reflects the decorative approach common to sixteenth-century print culture. This piece offers a glimpse into the intersection of classical literature and visual art during the French Renaissance, capturing a moment of metamorphosis with technical clarity.
