A classic 1920 Saturday Evening Post cover illustration by Norman Rockwell, depicting two children pulling a Christmas cracker with their pet terrier.
Norman Rockwell created The Party Favour as a cover illustration for the 25 December 1920 issue of The Saturday Evening Post. The image captures a moment of youthful tension and anticipation. A young boy in a formal suit and a girl in a white party dress pull at opposite ends of a Christmas cracker. The boy wears a focused, almost stern expression, while the girl appears slightly more hesitant or amused. A small terrier, adorned with a pink bow, looks up at the pair, adding a sense of domestic charm to the scene. Rockwell utilised a clean, neutral background to ensure the focus remains entirely on the figures and their interaction. His technique relies on precise draftsmanship and a clear narrative structure. The composition is balanced, with the horizontal line of the cracker creating a visual connection between the two children. The dog acts as a grounding element, anchoring the composition at the base. The artist employed a controlled colour palette, using the red of the cracker and the girl's bow to draw the eye across the frame. This work demonstrates his ability to observe and record the small, relatable moments of daily life. The attention to detail in the clothing and the expressions of the subjects provides a glimpse into the social conventions of the early twentieth century. Rockwell worked primarily as an illustrator, and his ability to convey a story through a single static image remains his most recognisable trait. This print offers a clear example of his approach to characterisation, where posture and facial expression communicate the entire narrative without the need for additional context.
