A detailed 18th-century etching by Georg Friedrich Schmidt, depicting the Presentation of the Virgin Mary after a painting by Pietro da Cortona.
This etching and engraving by Georg Friedrich Schmidt depicts the Presentation of the Virgin Mary at the Temple, a subject derived from apocryphal tradition. Schmidt, a skilled printmaker who spent significant time in Saint Petersburg, produced this work after a painting by Pietro da Cortona. The composition follows the conventions of Baroque religious art, utilising a complex arrangement of figures to guide the viewer's eye toward the young Mary as she ascends the temple steps.
In the centre, the High Priest receives the child, while surrounding figures display various expressions of reverence and contemplation. The upper portion of the print features putti descending from the clouds, adding a celestial dimension to the scene. Schmidt demonstrates technical mastery through his use of varied line weights and cross-hatching, which create depth and texture within the drapery and architectural elements. The play of light and shadow is managed with precision, giving the figures a sense of volume and presence.
At the base of the print, the inscription identifies the work as part of the Imperial Gallery in Saint Petersburg and includes a dedication to Catherine II, Empress of all the Russias. This inclusion reflects the political and cultural connections between European printmakers and the Russian court during the eighteenth century. The print serves as a record of the artistic exchange that occurred during this period, as European masters were commissioned to translate large-scale oil paintings into reproducible graphic formats. The work remains a clear example of the technical rigour applied to reproductive printmaking in the mid-eighteenth century, capturing the dramatic flair and emotional weight characteristic of the Baroque style.
