A detailed seventeenth-century engraving depicting the Prodigal Son tending to swine, executed with the technical precision characteristic of Boëtius Adamsz. Bolswert.
This engraving by Boëtius Adamsz. Bolswert depicts a scene from the biblical parable of the Prodigal Son. The composition focuses on the protagonist in his state of destitution, forced to tend to swine. Bolswert, a skilled printmaker from the Dutch Golden Age, employs precise line work to define the textures of the animals and the rustic surroundings. The figure of the young man is positioned centrally, his posture conveying a sense of reflection or prayer amidst his humble circumstances. The pigs, gathered around a trough, are rendered with anatomical attention, typical of the period's interest in naturalistic detail.
Bolswert was known for his technical proficiency in copperplate engraving, often collaborating with other artists of his time. His work frequently explored moral and religious themes, which were common subjects for print series intended for a broad audience. The use of light and shadow in this piece creates a sense of volume, drawing the viewer into the narrative moment. The background, featuring a simple structure and sparse vegetation, keeps the focus on the interaction between the man and the animals. This print reflects the stylistic conventions of early seventeenth-century Dutch printmaking, where clarity of form and narrative legibility were prioritised. The work provides an example of how biblical stories were interpreted through the lens of contemporary rural life, grounding the spiritual message in a recognisable, tangible reality. The fine lines and cross-hatching techniques demonstrate the artist's control over the medium, allowing for subtle gradations of tone that define the forms within the scene.
