"The Rake in Bedlam" by William Hogarth is a satirical engraving from 1735, depicting the final scene of *A Rake's Progress*, where Tom Rakewell is confined in Bedlam Hospital, surrounded by madness.
William Hogarth's "The Rake in Bedlam" is the eighth and final print in the series *A Rake's Progress*. Published in 1735, the series follows Tom Rakewell, a young man who inherits a fortune and subsequently squanders it through a life of indulgence, eventually ending in madness and confinement within Bedlam Hospital. This final scene depicts Rakewell in Bedlam, surrounded by the institution's inmates. The composition is filled with figures exhibiting various forms of mental derangement. Rakewell is shown in the centre, restrained and attended by a concerned woman, possibly his former lover, Sarah Young. Around him, other inmates display a range of eccentric behaviours, some lost in their own worlds, others engaging in bizarre activities. The setting is stark, with barred windows and sparse furnishings, emphasising the grim reality of the asylum. Hogarth uses detailed line work to capture the expressions and gestures of the figures, conveying a sense of chaos and despair. The print serves as a moral commentary on the consequences of vice and the fragility of reason.
