This etching by Sébastien Bourdon depicts the Holy Family's return from Egypt, rendered in delicate lines and classical style.
Sébastien Bourdon (1616-1671) was a French painter and printmaker, known for his classical style and versatility across various subjects, including portraits, history paintings, and landscapes. He spent time in Italy, absorbing influences from the Italian masters, which shaped his artistic approach. Bourdon was also one of the original twelve founders of the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture in 1648. His work displays a blend of French and Italian artistic traditions. 'The Return from Egypt' depicts the biblical scene of the Holy Family's return from their exile in Egypt, following the death of King Herod. The etching shows Mary, holding the infant Jesus, seated on a stone structure, accompanied by Joseph and an angel. The composition includes classical architectural elements and a distant cityscape, possibly representing the Holy Land. The figures are rendered with delicate lines, and the overall tone is serene and contemplative.
