A 19th-century albumen silver print by Fratelli Alinari documenting Antonio Veneziano's 14th-century fresco of Saint Ranieri in the Camposanto, Pisa.
This albumen silver print by the Fratelli Alinari firm captures a specific section of the fresco cycle dedicated to the life of Saint Ranieri, located within the Camposanto Monumentale in Pisa. The original fresco was painted by the Venetian artist Antonio Veneziano during the late 14th century. The photographic reproduction documents the narrative scene depicting the saint's return to his home city, a work that forms part of a larger series illustrating the hagiography of Pisa's patron saint.
The Alinari brothers, based in Florence, were pioneers in the systematic photographic documentation of Italian art and architecture. Their work provided scholars and the public with access to remote or fragile frescoes that were otherwise difficult to study in situ. This print preserves the visual information of the fresco, showing the characteristic Gothic style of Veneziano, including the architectural settings and the arrangement of figures typical of the Trecento period. The composition features a ship arriving at the port, with the saint and his companions depicted in a sequence of narrative events. The photograph captures the texture of the wall surface and the faded quality of the original paint, offering a record of the fresco's condition during the late 19th century.
As a historical document, this print reflects the intersection of early photographic technology and art history. The Alinari firm utilised large-format glass plate negatives to ensure high resolution, allowing for the observation of details in the drapery and the architectural elements of the Pisan cityscape depicted in the background. The print is mounted on a card, typical of the presentation methods used by the studio for their extensive catalogue of Italian cultural heritage.
