A detailed seventeenth-century engraving by Gérard Audran, depicting a dramatic rescue scene based on the work of Nicolas Poussin.
This engraving by Gérard Audran depicts a dramatic episode from the life of Pyrrhus of Epirus, based on the original composition by Nicolas Poussin. The scene captures the moment of rescue, where the infant is spirited away from his enemies amidst a rocky, wooded terrain. Audran, a master of the burin, translates Poussin's painterly approach into a precise graphic language, employing varied line weights to define the muscular forms of the soldiers and the flowing drapery of the figures.
The composition is organised with a clear sense of narrative urgency. On the left, soldiers are positioned in defensive postures, their spears angled to suggest the threat of pursuit. In the centre, the figures of the rescuers are rendered with classical poise, their gestures conveying both haste and protective care. The background features rugged rock formations and dense foliage, which serve to frame the central action and provide a sense of atmospheric depth. Audran's technical skill is evident in the way he handles the light and shadow, creating a sense of volume that mimics the weight of the original oil painting.
This print belongs to a tradition of reproductive engraving, a practice that allowed the compositions of great masters to reach a wider audience. Audran was particularly noted for his ability to capture the spirit of Poussin's work, maintaining the balance between the emotional intensity of the narrative and the formal rigour of the classical style. The inclusion of text at the base of the print provides historical context, identifying the subject matter and the source of the composition. This work is a fine example of seventeenth-century printmaking, demonstrating the technical precision required to translate complex painterly narratives into monochrome.
