Franz Marc's 'The Tower of Blue Horses' (1913) is a striking example of German Expressionism. The painting features four blue horses rendered in simplified forms, set against a background of dynamic colours.
Franz Marc (1880-1916) was a German Expressionist painter and printmaker, a founder of Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider), a group of artists united in their desire to express spiritual truths through art. Marc believed that animals possessed a certain purity that humans had lost, and he often depicted them in his work. His use of colour was symbolic, with blue representing spirituality and masculinity. Yellow represented joy, and red represented violence. 'The Tower of Blue Horses', painted in 1913, shows four blue horses stacked vertically, their forms simplified and angular. The horses are set against a background of yellows, reds, and oranges, creating a sense of dynamism and energy. The painting was part of the collection of the Nationalgalerie in Berlin but disappeared in 1945, likely destroyed during the Second World War. The original painting is lost, known only through black and white photographs and colour reproductions.
