Description
The Trinkie in Highland Wick holds turquoise water within pale pool walls beside dark shore slabs, with a small sailing boat offshore beneath a spacious blue sky in bright summer sunshine.
The Trinkie is a tidal seawater swimming pool at Wick’s South Head in Caithness. Created from part of a former quarry, it has served local swimmers since the early twentieth century. The name comes from the Scots word for trench, reflecting the pool’s long narrow shape among the coastal rocks.
A pale concrete edge encloses turquoise water beside broad flat brown rock slabs. Thin white waves wash the lower ledges beyond the pool, where deeper blue sea reaches a straight distant horizon. A small white sailing boat rests offshore beneath layered cloud banks. Short green grass above the pool and brilliant pool reflections suggest calm summer weather on the exposed shore.
