A dynamic depiction of traditional tuna fishing in Ayamonte, capturing the intense light and physical labour of the Spanish coast.
Joaquín Sorolla painted The Tunny Catch in 1919 as part of a monumental commission for the Hispanic Society of America. This work depicts the traditional tuna fishing industry in Ayamonte, a coastal town in Huelva, Spain. The scene captures the physical labour of fishermen as they haul their catch onto the shore, a process known as the almadraba.
Sorolla employs a high-key palette to convey the intense Mediterranean light. The composition is structured by the wooden framework of a temporary shelter, which creates a rhythmic series of vertical lines across the canvas. This structure frames the activity, allowing the viewer to observe the interaction between the workers and the large, silver-toned fish. The artist uses rapid, confident brushwork to suggest the movement of the figures and the shimmering quality of the water in the background.
Unlike his more tranquil beach scenes, this painting focuses on the industrial reality of coastal life. The figures are rendered with a sense of immediacy, their postures reflecting the exertion required for the task. The interplay of shadow and light under the canopy provides a sense of depth, while the foreground is crowded with the forms of the tuna, creating a tactile quality. Sorolla was known for his ability to capture the specific atmospheric conditions of the Spanish coast, and this work demonstrates his mastery of light and colour in an outdoor setting. The painting remains a significant record of regional customs and maritime history at the beginning of the twentieth century.
