A classical allegorical engraving by Gérard Audran, depicting a female figure representing the vineyard, based on the designs of Raphael.
This engraving by Gérard Audran depicts a female figure personifying the vineyard, or 'Vignoble'. The work is part of a series of allegorical figures derived from the designs of Raphael, reflecting the seventeenth-century French fascination with classical antiquity and the formal rigour of the Roman school. Audran, a master of the burin, employs precise hatching to define the sculptural volume of the figure, the texture of the drapery, and the weight of the basket filled with grapes.
The figure stands in a contrapposto stance, her head crowned with a capital, suggesting an architectural function similar to a caryatid. Her expression is calm and detached, consistent with the idealised aesthetic of the period. The basket she holds serves as the primary attribute, identifying her role within the allegorical programme. The composition is balanced and clear, typical of the reproductive printmaking techniques Audran perfected during his tenure in Paris. By translating the painterly qualities of Raphael into the linear language of engraving, Audran provided contemporary audiences with access to the grand manner of Italian Renaissance art.
Audran was highly regarded for his ability to maintain the integrity of the original design while adapting it to the requirements of the copper plate. The clarity of the lines and the subtle gradation of tone demonstrate his technical skill. This print offers a view into the pedagogical and artistic values of the French Academy, where the study of classical form was paramount. The work remains a fine example of the intersection between Italian Renaissance invention and French Baroque printmaking, capturing a moment where the legacy of Raphael was codified for a new generation of artists and collectors.
