A dreamlike, symbolic composition by Gustav Klimt depicting a central figure surrounded by intertwined women, rendered with dense floral patterns and deep, atmospheric colours.
Painted in 1913, The Virgin (Die Jungfrau) is a representative work from the later period of Gustav Klimt. The composition depicts a central female figure surrounded by a cluster of other women, their bodies intertwined in a dreamlike, circular arrangement. Klimt employs his characteristic decorative approach, covering the surfaces of the figures and their garments with a dense array of floral motifs, geometric shapes, and swirling patterns.
The painting explores themes of transition and metamorphosis. The central figure, often interpreted as the virgin, appears to be in a state of awakening or transformation, distinct from the surrounding figures who seem to represent different stages of womanhood. Klimt uses a palette dominated by deep purples, blues, and blacks, which provides a dark, atmospheric backdrop for the lighter, flesh-toned figures. The application of paint varies from smooth, precise rendering of the faces to more textured, ornamental treatment of the fabrics.
Klimt was a central figure of the Vienna Secession, a group of artists who broke away from the conservative academic traditions of the time. His work during this period often moved away from the gold-leaf ornamentation of his earlier 'Golden Phase' towards a more painterly, colour-focused style. The Virgin demonstrates his interest in the psychological and symbolic aspects of human experience, particularly the stages of life and the nature of femininity. The figures are not placed in a realistic setting, but rather float within a space defined by colour and pattern, creating a sense of detachment from the physical world. This work remains a clear example of Klimt's ability to combine decorative art with complex, symbolic narratives.
