A late nineteenth-century albumen silver print by the Fratelli Alinari studio, documenting Tintoretto's Renaissance masterpiece, The Wedding Feast at Cana.
This monochrome photographic print, produced by the Fratelli Alinari firm in Florence, documents the celebrated painting 'The Wedding Feast at Cana' by the Venetian master Tintoretto. Established in 1852, the Alinari studio became a primary source for high-quality photographic records of Italian art, providing scholars and collectors with access to works held in public galleries like the Uffizi. This print captures the dramatic perspective and chiaroscuro characteristic of Tintoretto's original composition. The image depicts the biblical narrative of the miracle at Cana, where water is transformed into wine. Tintoretto organises the scene with a long, receding table that draws the eye toward the figures seated in the background. In the foreground, servants attend to large vessels, their physical exertion contrasting with the seated guests. The composition relies on the interplay of light and shadow to define the architectural space of the hall, with exposed ceiling beams and arched openings adding depth to the interior setting. As a historical document, this print reflects the late nineteenth-century practice of using photography to catalogue and disseminate European art history. The inclusion of the original studio markings and the 'Riproduzione Interdetta' (reproduction forbidden) text at the top edge provides context regarding the copyright and distribution standards of the period. The print is mounted on a page, complete with decorative corner tabs, which was a common method for preserving such images in archival albums. This piece offers a glimpse into the history of art documentation, capturing the essence of a Renaissance masterpiece through the lens of early industrial photography.
