A fine wood engraving by Timothy Cole, reproducing Whistler's iconic Symphony in White, No. 1. This piece demonstrates the technical precision of nineteenth-century reproductive printmaking.
This wood engraving by Timothy Cole reproduces James Abbott McNeill Whistler's famous painting, Symphony in White, No. 1: The White Girl. Cole was a master of the wood engraving medium, known for his ability to translate the tonal qualities of oil paintings into the precise, linear language of the block. His work was frequently commissioned by magazines such as The Century to bring fine art to a wider audience.
The image depicts a woman standing against a draped background, her figure rendered with a focus on the subtle variations of white and cream tones. The original painting, which caused a stir at the Salon des Refusés in 1863, was a manifesto for the Aesthetic movement, prioritising formal harmony over narrative content. Cole captures the ethereal quality of the subject, Joanna Hiffernan, through a dense network of fine lines that mimic the texture of the fabric and the soft light of the interior setting. The presence of the wolf skin rug at her feet, a detail present in the original composition, adds a textural contrast to the smooth folds of her dress.
Cole's technique involves a sophisticated use of cross-hatching and stippling to create depth and shadow. By eschewing the bold, heavy lines common in earlier woodcuts, he achieves a painterly effect that respects the original artist's intent. This print offers a look into the nineteenth-century practice of reproductive engraving, where the engraver acted as a bridge between the gallery and the printed page. The composition remains balanced, with the verticality of the figure echoed by the folds of the curtain, creating a sense of stillness and contemplation.
