A woodcut from Hans Holbein the Younger's *Dance of Death* series, this print shows a young child reaching towards Death, a skeleton figure with an arrow. The image is a stark reminder of mortality's universal reach.
This woodcut is part of Hans Holbein the Younger's series, *The Dance of Death*, created around 1526. Holbein, a German artist and printmaker, is celebrated for his portraits and his contributions to the Reformation-era woodcut. This series presents death as an omnipresent force, affecting individuals from all walks of life. Each print depicts a figure confronted by a skeleton, symbolising death, in scenarios that reflect their profession or social status. In this particular scene, a young child reaches out towards Death, who stands beside them holding an arrow. A woman, presumably the child's mother, recoils in horror. The setting is a humble interior, with a cooking pot over a fire and a crude timber structure. An hourglass sits at the lower right, a traditional memento mori. The composition, rendered with fine lines, conveys both the immediacy and inevitability of death. The print serves as a commentary on mortality and the universality of death's reach, regardless of age or innocence.
