An early modernist study by Thomas Hart Benton, featuring three figures rendered in bold, non-naturalistic colours and sculptural forms.
This work by Thomas Hart Benton represents a period in his career when he experimented with the colour-focused theories of Synchromism. Before he became known for his regionalist murals, Benton spent time in Paris and New York, where he engaged with European modernism. This painting displays his interest in the structural potential of colour, rather than traditional representation.
The composition features three figures rendered in bold, non-naturalistic hues. A central figure in yellow is flanked by a figure in deep green to the left and a figure in red to the right. The forms are sculptural and heavy, reflecting Benton's preoccupation with volume and mass. The application of paint is textured, with visible brushwork that builds the musculature and weight of the bodies. The background is composed of shifting planes of blue and purple, which push the figures forward and create a sense of compressed space.
Unlike his later, more narrative-driven work, this piece focuses on the interplay of light and form. The figures are not portraits of specific individuals, but rather studies in anatomy and chromatic harmony. The lack of a defined setting allows the viewer to concentrate on the physical relationships between the bodies and the way light interacts with their surfaces. This painting offers a glimpse into the early, formative years of an artist who would eventually define a specific style of American art, showing his initial alignment with the avant-garde movements of the early twentieth century.
