A modernist study by Gerard Sekoto, depicting three figures in motion through an arched space using expressive, bold colour.
Gerard Sekoto, a pioneer of South African modernism, produced this work during a period of significant transition in his career. The composition depicts three figures viewed from behind, moving away from the viewer into a tunnel-like space. The use of gouache allows for a fluid application of colour, where the figures are defined by bold, simplified forms rather than precise anatomical detail. Sekoto employs a palette of yellow, deep blue, and red, creating a sense of movement and atmosphere through the interplay of light and shadow.
The arched background suggests an urban environment, perhaps a subway or underpass, which was a common motif in Sekoto's depictions of daily life in South Africa during the 1940s. His approach to the human form is expressive, focusing on the posture and gait of the men to convey a sense of purpose or journey. The figures are rendered with thick outlines, separating them from the surrounding space and drawing attention to their collective movement. By omitting facial features, Sekoto invites the viewer to focus on the universality of the scene rather than specific identities.
This piece reflects the artist's ability to capture the essence of urban existence through a modernist lens. His work from this era often explored the social realities of the time, yet this particular study remains focused on the formal qualities of light and composition. The rhythmic repetition of the figures creates a sense of progression, while the curved lines of the background echo the movement of the men. As a fine art print, this work retains the texture and tonal variations of the original gouache, offering a clear view into Sekoto's technique and his contribution to the development of twentieth-century African art.
