A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Okumura Masanobu, featuring a stylised tiger partially hidden behind a bamboo stalk.
This woodblock print by Okumura Masanobu depicts a tiger partially obscured by a thick stalk of bamboo. Masanobu was a central figure in the development of Ukiyo-e, known for his innovations in print technology and his role as both a publisher and an artist. His work often bridged the gap between early, simpler print styles and the more complex, multi-coloured compositions that would follow later in the eighteenth century.
The tiger, a subject often imported from Chinese painting traditions into Japanese art, is rendered here with a stylised approach. The creature displays a fierce expression, with its mouth slightly agape, while its body is covered in rhythmic, dark stripes that contrast against the lighter paper tone. The bamboo stalk serves as a vertical anchor for the composition, its dark, segmented form providing a stark contrast to the organic, flowing lines of the tiger's fur. The artist employs a limited palette, typical of the period, relying on the strength of the black ink lines to define form and texture.
This print reflects the Edo period interest in exotic animals and the symbolic pairing of the tiger with bamboo, a common motif representing strength and resilience. The composition is balanced, with the tiger emerging from behind the bamboo, creating a sense of movement within a static frame. The print demonstrates Masanobu's technical skill in woodblock carving, where the precision of the lines allows for a clear distinction between the animal's features and the surrounding foliage. As a piece of historical printmaking, it offers insight into the aesthetic priorities of the mid-Edo period, where clarity of line and symbolic subject matter were highly valued by the urban population of Edo.
