A 1771 engraving by John Hall after Nathaniel Dance, depicting a scene from Shakespeare's Timon of Athens.
This engraving by John Hall, published in 1771, reproduces a painting by Nathaniel Dance. The work depicts a scene from William Shakespeare's play, Timon of Athens. In the composition, the embittered Timon sits in the wilderness, holding a spade, having retreated from the society that betrayed him. He is approached by two women, Phrynia and Timandra, who offer him gold. To the right, Alcibiades stands in military attire, observing the interaction. The print demonstrates the technical precision of Hall, who was appointed Historical Engraver to King George III. The shading and cross-hatching techniques create a sense of volume in the figures and depth in the surrounding woodland. The work was produced for John Boydell, a publisher who commissioned numerous engravings based on British literature and history to promote the national school of painting. The figures are rendered with the anatomical clarity typical of the period, reflecting the influence of classical sculpture on eighteenth-century British art. The contrast between the rugged, semi-nude Timon and the draped, elegant figures of the women creates a visual tension that mirrors the thematic conflict of the play. The background foliage is executed with fine lines, providing a textured environment that frames the central narrative. This print represents the collaborative efforts between painters and engravers during the Georgian era to disseminate high-art compositions to a wider public audience through the medium of the print market.
