Description
A mixed media assemblage by Dieter Roth, documenting the accumulation of daily life on a desk mat from his Basel office.
Dieter Roth, a central figure in the Fluxus movement, often utilised everyday objects as the basis for his creative output. This work, titled Tischmatte, Büro Hegenheimerstrasse, Basel, originates from a desk mat used in his office. By preserving the surface of his workspace, Roth captures the accumulation of daily life, including scribbles, notes, and ephemera that would otherwise be discarded. The composition functions as a record of time and activity. The surface is covered in a dense layer of marks, ink stains, and collaged elements. These fragments of paper, photographs, and handwritten notes create a visual history of the artist's environment. Roth rejected the notion of the finished, polished artwork, preferring instead to document the process of living and working. The desk mat acts as a repository for his thoughts and interactions, transforming mundane office detritus into a deliberate artistic statement. Visually, the piece is divided between the sparse, upper section, which contains faint pencil markings, and the lower section, which is heavily populated with layers of debris. This contrast draws attention to the way information accumulates over time. The work invites the viewer to examine the small details, such as the fragments of text and the textures of the various papers attached to the surface. It is a study in the aesthetics of disorder and the preservation of the transient. By elevating a functional object to the status of an artwork, Roth challenges traditional definitions of artistic production. The piece remains a clear example of his interest in the intersection of art and life, where the boundaries between the two are intentionally blurred.
