Mattia Preti (1613-1699) was an Italian Baroque artist who spent much of his career in Southern Italy and Malta. He is known for his dramatic use of light and shadow, a style influenced by Caravaggio. Preti's works often depict religious or historical subjects, rendered with dynamic compositions and expressive figures. 'Tribute Money' illustrates a scene from the New Testament where Jesus is questioned about the lawfulness of paying taxes to Caesar. The painting is characterised by its tenebrism, with figures emerging from a dark background, illuminated by a strong light source. The faces are rendered with realism, capturing a range of emotions from contemplation to scepticism. The composition is arranged to draw the viewer's eye to the central figures, Jesus and the questioner, as they engage in their exchange.
