A detailed pen and ink drawing by Cornelis de Kruyff featuring a decorative trophy of grape harvest implements and classical motifs.
This work by Cornelis de Kruyff presents a classic example of the trophy motif, a decorative arrangement of objects associated with a specific theme or profession. In this instance, the composition centres on the iconography of the grape harvest and viticulture. De Kruyff employs a precise pen and ink technique, augmented by subtle grey washes to define volume and shadow within the objects.
The arrangement includes a wooden grape bucket, a pitcher, musical instruments, and a small basket of fruit. A mask, often associated with Bacchus or theatrical revelry, is tucked into the lower section, adding a layer of classical allusion to the harvest theme. The entire collection is bound together by ribbons, a common device in eighteenth-century decorative design to unify disparate elements into a single, balanced vertical form.
De Kruyff, a Dutch artist active during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, demonstrates a high degree of control over his medium. The lines are clean and purposeful, while the wash application provides a soft, atmospheric quality to the metallic surfaces of the pitcher and the organic textures of the fruit. Such drawings were frequently produced as preparatory designs for larger decorative schemes, including wall paintings, plasterwork, or furniture ornamentation. The composition reflects the period's interest in structured, symbolic imagery, where objects are selected not merely for their utility, but for their ability to communicate a specific narrative or allegorical meaning. The work remains a clear record of the technical skill required for professional draughtsmanship in the Dutch decorative tradition, prioritising clarity of form and harmonious balance over expressive distortion.
