An architectural etching by Jean Lepautre featuring a formal garden pavilion with three arches and a tiered fountain.
This etching by Jean Lepautre depicts a formal garden pavilion defined by three grand arches. Lepautre, a prolific French draughtsman and engraver, produced a vast body of work documenting the architectural tastes of the seventeenth century. His prints were widely circulated, providing models for architects, decorators, and garden designers across Europe.
The composition displays a symmetrical arrangement typical of the period. The pavilion features a balustrade adorned with urns and figures, while the walls are decorated with a diamond-patterned trellis. Through the central arch, a tiered fountain is visible, drawing the eye into the distance. Small groups of figures in classical attire populate the foreground and the terrace, adding a sense of scale and human activity to the architectural structure. The precision of the line work allows for a clear distinction between the stone masonry, the foliage, and the decorative elements.
Lepautre was known for his ability to render complex spatial arrangements on a two-dimensional surface. This work reflects the French interest in formal garden design, where architecture and nature were integrated to create a sense of order and grandeur. The inclusion of the publisher's mark, 'a Paris chez P. Mariette', indicates the commercial nature of these prints, which were intended for a public interested in contemporary design trends. The work remains a clear example of the technical skill involved in seventeenth-century printmaking, where the etcher's needle was used to replicate the textures of stone and the soft forms of human figures with equal clarity.
