A detailed eighteenth-century watercolour depicting a formal sleigh procession, capturing the social customs and period attire of the Dutch elite.
This work by the Dutch artist and engraver Abraham Delfos depicts a formal sleigh procession, a popular winter pastime among the eighteenth-century elite in the Netherlands. The composition is clean and precise, reflecting the disciplined approach of a draughtsman accustomed to the rigours of printmaking. The scene captures a single horse pulling an ornate, small sleigh occupied by two figures in period attire. A third figure walks alongside, carrying a torch, which suggests the procession takes place during a winter evening or night event.
The artist employs a delicate application of watercolour, allowing the ink outlines to define the forms of the figures, the horse, and the decorative elements of the sleigh. The green flag, featuring a classical figure, adds a touch of heraldic colour to the otherwise muted palette of the snow-covered environment. Delfos was known for his documentation of contemporary life and his ability to render the specific fashions and social customs of his time with clarity. This piece functions as a visual record of the elaborate social rituals associated with ice-skating and sleighing culture in the Dutch Republic.
The composition is intentionally flat, placing the subjects against a neutral background to focus the viewer on the details of the costumes and the equipment. The horse is rendered with careful attention to its harness and posture, while the figures are depicted with the stiff, formal elegance typical of the era. This print offers a glimpse into the leisure activities of the Dutch upper classes, where such processions were often organised as displays of wealth and social standing. The work remains a valuable historical document, providing insight into the material culture and social habits of the late eighteenth century.
