A detailed seventeenth-century engraving by Gérard Audran depicting two distinct termini, showcasing the technical precision of Baroque architectural illustration.
This engraving by Gérard Audran presents a technical study of two distinct termini, architectural pillars that taper towards the base and terminate in a human bust. Audran, a master engraver of the French Baroque period, was known for his ability to translate the complex compositions of painters into precise, monochromatic prints. This work reflects the period's fascination with classical antiquity and the formalised study of architectural elements.
The composition is split into two vertical sections. On the left, a youthful female figure with braided hair is depicted, her form merging into a fluted column. On the right, a bearded, older male figure is shown, draped in heavy fabric that cascades down the tapering pillar. The contrast between the smooth, youthful features of the female figure and the rugged, weathered appearance of the male figure provides a balanced study in characterisation. The engraving technique employs fine, parallel lines to create volume and shadow, particularly within the folds of the drapery and the subtle modelling of the faces.
Audran's work often served to document classical motifs for contemporary architects and designers. By isolating these elements, the print allows for a clear examination of the proportions and decorative details inherent in the design of termini. The clean, neutral background ensures that the focus remains entirely on the structural and anatomical details of the figures. This print is a representative example of the high level of technical proficiency required in seventeenth-century printmaking, where the engraver acted as both a technician and an interpreter of classical form. The work remains a valuable reference for those interested in the history of architectural ornamentation and the evolution of print techniques during the reign of Louis XIV.
