A refined woodblock print by Okumura Masanobu showing two women engaged in calligraphy and music within a traditional Japanese interior.
This woodblock print by Okumura Masanobu depicts two women engaged in artistic pursuits within a domestic interior. The composition utilises the clean, linear aesthetic characteristic of early eighteenth-century Japanese printmaking. One woman is shown writing upon a sheet of paper, her posture relaxed as she focuses on her task. Beside her, a second woman holds a shamisen, a three-stringed musical instrument, suggesting a scene of cultural refinement and leisure.
The background features a framed screen or painting depicting a coastal scene with a boat and a seated figure, which adds a layer of depth to the otherwise flat, graphic arrangement. The artist employs a minimalist approach to space, allowing the figures and their patterned kimono to occupy the visual field without unnecessary clutter. The floral motifs on the garments and the small vase of flowers placed near the writer provide decorative elements that balance the composition.
Masanobu was a significant figure in the development of Ukiyo-e, often credited with innovations in print techniques and the refinement of the bijin-ga genre, which focuses on images of beautiful women. His work during this period often featured this specific style of line work, which emphasises clarity and form. The print reflects the social values of the Edo period, where the cultivation of arts such as calligraphy and music was a standard expectation for women of a certain status. The absence of heavy shading or complex colour palettes directs the viewer's attention to the grace of the figures and the precision of the woodblock carving. This piece serves as an example of the technical skill required to produce balanced, narrative-driven prints during the mid-Edo era.
