Under the Wave off Kanagawa, widely recognised as The Great Wave, is the most famous print from Katsushika Hokusai's series, Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji. Produced during the Edo period, this woodblock print captures a moment of tension between the power of the ocean and the stillness of the mountain. The composition is dominated by a massive, claw-like wave that threatens three oshiokuri-bune, or fast boats, used for transporting live fish to markets in Edo.

Hokusai employs a restricted palette, relying heavily on Prussian blue, a synthetic pigment recently introduced to Japan at the time. This colour choice provides the depth and contrast necessary to define the foam and the structure of the water. In the distance, Mount Fuji appears small and stable, acting as a visual anchor against the dynamic movement of the foreground. The perspective is flattened, a characteristic of the Ukiyo-e style, which prioritises graphic clarity over realistic depth.

The print demonstrates Hokusai's mastery of line and form.
