A traditional Turkish ebru study featuring a single tulip motif, created by master marbler Necmeddin Okyay.
This work is a fine example of ebru, the traditional Turkish art of paper marbling. Necmeddin Okyay, a master of this craft, utilised the technique of manipulating pigments on a thickened aqueous surface to create this composition. The process requires precise control over the viscosity of the water and the surface tension of the paints, which are applied with brushes made of rosewood and horsehair.
The central motif is a single tulip, a flower of great cultural significance in Ottoman art. Okyay achieved this form by carefully dropping and shaping the colours directly onto the size, a method known as 'çiçekli ebru' or floral marbling. The background displays a classic marbled pattern, often referred to as 'battal' or stone-patterned, which provides a textured contrast to the clarity of the central bloom. The soft, golden tones of the background harmonise with the deeper, earthy hues of the tulip, demonstrating the artist's command over colour balance.
Ebru is not merely a decorative craft but a meditative practice. The artist must work with the fluid nature of the medium, as the pigments spread and interact in unpredictable ways. Okyay was instrumental in preserving and teaching these techniques during the early twentieth century, ensuring that the methods remained accurate to their historical roots. This print captures the delicate interplay between the controlled floral form and the organic, swirling background characteristic of the marbling process. It offers a glimpse into the technical rigour required to produce such precise imagery on a liquid surface, where every movement of the stylus influences the final result.
