A high-contrast, intimate black and white photograph by Dutch artist Sanne Sannes, focusing on the abstract beauty of the human form.
Sanne Sannes was a Dutch photographer known for his experimental approach to the human form. His work often features high-contrast black and white imagery, characterised by heavy grain and soft focus. This particular study captures an intimate moment, where the boundaries between figures blur into a singular composition of light and shadow. Sannes frequently utilised extreme close-ups and unconventional cropping to remove his subjects from a specific time or place. By focusing on the texture of skin and the curvature of the body, he created images that feel immediate and tactile. His technique involved deliberate overexposure and underexposure, which allowed him to manipulate the tonal range of his prints. This results in deep blacks and luminous highlights that define the contours of the figures. During his short career, Sannes moved away from traditional documentary photography. He preferred a subjective, emotive style that prioritised the psychological state of the subject over narrative clarity. The lack of context in this image invites the viewer to focus entirely on the physical interaction and the interplay of shadow across the skin. The visible film edges and the raw quality of the print reflect his hands-on approach in the darkroom, where he often experimented with chemical processes to achieve specific aesthetic results. This piece is representative of his mid-1960s output, a period defined by his exploration of eroticism and the abstract potential of the human body. His work remains a distinct example of European avant-garde photography from the post-war era, prioritising mood and form above all else.
