A dynamic abstract composition by Sam Francis, featuring bold primary colours and fluid, gestural forms against a stark white background.
Sam Francis, an American painter associated with the later generation of Abstract Expressionism, produced this work during the final period of his career. His practice is defined by a preoccupation with light, space, and the physical properties of paint. This composition demonstrates his characteristic approach to colour and negative space, where the white of the paper functions as an active element rather than a passive background.
The work features a central, saturated blue mass that anchors the composition. Against this, Francis introduces primary yellow and red forms, which appear to float or drift across the surface. The application of paint varies from dense, opaque areas to thin, translucent washes, suggesting the fluidity of the medium. The drips and splatters indicate the speed and spontaneity of his process, a hallmark of his later works where he moved away from the all-over compositions of his earlier years toward more concentrated, gestural arrangements.
Francis spent significant time in Paris and Japan, and these experiences informed his aesthetic. The influence of Japanese calligraphy and the concept of 'ma' (the space between things) is evident in the way he balances the painted forms against the unpainted paper. The work avoids traditional perspective, instead creating a sense of depth through the layering of pigments and the interaction of colour. By focusing on the materiality of the paint and the openness of the field, Francis invites the viewer to engage with the work as a direct experience of colour and form. This print captures the immediacy of his original acrylic application, preserving the subtle variations in tone and the crisp edges of the colour fields that define his late-career output.
