Description
An early modernist study of architectural forms by Alberto Burri, featuring heavy impasto and a muted, atmospheric palette.
Upper Piazza is an early work by Alberto Burri, dating to the period immediately following his return to Italy after the Second World War. Before he became known for his radical use of industrial materials like burlap, plastic, and iron, Burri explored the possibilities of oil paint through a lens of architectural reduction. This painting depicts a quiet, urban space, stripped of human presence and specific detail. The composition relies on the interplay of two primary building facades: one rendered in a cool, muted green and the other in a warm, ochre tone. These structures frame a narrow, shadowed passage that leads the eye into the depth of the canvas. The application of paint is heavy and tactile, suggesting the physical weight of stone and plaster. Burri uses a restricted palette of blues, greys, and earthy yellows to create a sense of stillness. The light is diffuse, casting long, indistinct shadows across the ground plane, which is textured with thick, impasto strokes. This approach to the surface of the canvas anticipates his later experiments with materiality, where the paint itself becomes a physical object rather than a medium for illusionistic representation. The work avoids decorative flourishes, focusing instead on the geometry of the built environment and the atmospheric quality of the light. By simplifying the scene into basic shapes and tones, Burri captures a sense of isolation and permanence. It is a study in balance, where the contrast between the cool tones of the left wall and the warmer tones of the right creates a tension that holds the composition together. The absence of figures or specific landmarks allows the viewer to focus on the structural rhythm of the architecture and the raw, physical presence of the paint.
