A refined Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Kikugawa Eizan, featuring a still life of tea utensils and a bowl of confections accompanied by elegant calligraphy.
This woodblock print by Kikugawa Eizan depicts a refined arrangement of tea utensils and a bowl containing confections. Eizan, a prominent figure in the Ukiyo-e tradition, is typically associated with portraits of women, yet this work demonstrates his skill in the genre of surimono. Surimono were privately commissioned prints, often distributed among poetry circles, which explains the inclusion of calligraphic verse alongside the visual subject.
The composition is balanced and deliberate. A dark, rectangular tray holds a cast-iron teapot and three small, delicate cups. Beside this, a bowl decorated with a wave pattern contains colourful sweets. A small, circular red tray with chopsticks completes the arrangement. The artist employs a clean, minimalist approach, allowing the negative space of the paper to define the scene. The lines are precise and controlled, reflecting the high technical standards of the Edo period print workshops.
The inclusion of text adds a layer of literary context, suggesting this print was intended for a sophisticated audience familiar with the customs of tea preparation and seasonal gatherings. The colour palette is restrained, relying on muted tones for the tray and teapot, contrasted by the subtle red of the small dish and the blue patterns on the bowl. This work provides a glimpse into the material culture of early nineteenth-century Japan, where the aesthetic presentation of food and drink was as important as the items themselves. The print captures a quiet, domestic moment, stripped of unnecessary detail to focus on the form and texture of the objects. It remains a fine example of the intersection between graphic design, poetry, and daily life in the Ukiyo-e period.
