A striking 1952 still life by Moïse Kisling, featuring bright yellow mimosa blossoms set against a deep blue background.
Moïse Kisling, a central figure of the School of Paris, produced this still life in 1952. The composition focuses on a dense arrangement of mimosa blossoms, rendered with a characteristic clarity and sculptural quality. Kisling, who moved to Paris from Kraków in 1910, developed a distinct approach to painting that balanced the influence of his contemporaries with a personal commitment to form and colour.
In this work, the bright yellow clusters of the mimosa provide a sharp contrast against the deep, saturated blue of the background. The artist employs a controlled application of paint, ensuring that each floral element maintains its own volume and presence within the vase. The green vessel sits upon a simple surface, grounding the arrangement without distracting from the primary subject. Unlike the more fluid or abstract approaches common in mid-century European art, Kisling maintains a firm grip on the physical reality of his subjects.
His technique often involved smooth surfaces and precise contours, which lend a sense of permanence to the ephemeral nature of cut flowers. The blue backdrop, applied with subtle variations in tone, creates a sense of depth that pushes the yellow blossoms forward. This painting captures the artist's ability to transform a domestic subject into a study of colour relationships and structural balance. It remains a representative example of his later period, where his focus shifted toward refined, decorative compositions that retained the emotional weight of his earlier, more melancholic works. The clarity of the light and the deliberate placement of the mimosa branches demonstrate his technical discipline and his eye for the interplay between complementary colours.
